Tutaenui Reservoir - walkway

Experience; Walk; Discover;

This nature reserve is well on its way to becoming a destination recreational space. Head out on this 3.4-km loop trail near Marton, Manawatu-Wanganui.

Generally considered an easy route, it takes an average of 50 min to complete. This trail is great for birding, hiking, and horseback riding. Dogs are welcome and may be off-leash in some areas.

Sutherland Puriri Reserve

There are three tracks in the 60 hectare reserve, from 20 minutes to an hour and fifteen minutes. The longest track (the blue track) circuits the whole reserve. Just inside the forest at the first track intersection a sign has been erected indicating the track network in the reserve.

The reserve is located in the Turakina Valley, at the junction of Mangahoe and Turakina Valley Roads, 20kms west of Hunterville. Access to the main part of the reserve is over a stile at the southern-most point of the reserve off Turakina Valley Rd.

Laird's Reserve

Experience; Walk;

The reserve has one circular track that takes an hour to complete. The reserve is located in the Turakina Valley, 10km west of Hunterville on the Mangahoe Road. It is not visible from the road, but it is well signposted.

Te Araroa - Whanganui - Bulls

As you come out of Whanganui, take No 2 Line Road which can be accessed by the following options:

  • 1. Crossing the City Bridge from Taupo Quay at Victoria Avenue
  • 2. Climbing the Durie Hill (355) steps to the tower at the top, or
  • 3. Taking the Durie Hill Elevator (closed Christmas Day). 8am-6pm Mon-Fri. 10am-5pm Sat and Sun. $2 charge.

If you take the steps or elevator following Durie Street to Portal Street, this then carries on to N02 Line. Walk to Fordell which is approx 14kms, turn right onto Warrengate Road for approximately 4km and walk to SH3. Turn left and walk for 3km and cross the Whangaehu River Bridge. Turn right across the bridge into Whangaehu Beach Road and walk to the end. Go through the gate and carry on following the track to the beach. From Whangaehu to the Beach is approximately 8km. Turn left and walk along the beach till you get to the Turakina River (cross between markers). Check the tide and cross at low tide. You will reach the beach settlement of Koitiata.

Santoft Route - 18km / 7-8 hours

Head south along the beach. Look for a marker by a stream bed after approximately 13.5km, at km 1423.5 (v40). There are other tracks entering the forest that do not fit the current Te Araroa route. If you get to the fire lookout you have gone too far by about 1km, go back, do not enter the bomb range.

Then turn left and follow the blaze markings to the forest road. Follow the forest road which leads southeast for approximately 2.5kms until you come across Raumai Road, then walk for approximately 11km to Bulls Township.

Fire is a serious threat to these forests. For safety reasons, camping and fires are not permitted on the beach and through the exotic forest.

Mangaweka Bridge

History still alive today. Built-in 1904, the Mangaweka Bridge over the Rangitīkei River divides the Rangitīkei and Manawatū districts. This historic bridge is the only cantilever road bridge left in New Zealand.

Its life as a functional bridge has been under threat due to safety concerns, with the weight restriction reduced to 6000kgs, meaning vehicles any larger than a medium-sized motorhome can no longer cross the bridge. Today it’s a tourist icon, allowing visitors to enjoy the breathtaking river views, papa cliffs and surrounding beauty.

Mangaweka Scenic Reserve

Experience; Walk;

Enjoy great views over the Rangitikei River terraces on this short loop walk that's suitable for children. This is a great short walk and the track is easy to follow, although there are some steep parts it is within most people’s capabilities.

Children will be able to tackle this walk easily, provided they’re big enough to walk up steps and can endure an hour of gentle walking.

At the first big kahikatea tree, look left and you’ll see an open, grassy area providing stunning views out across the Mangaweka river terraces and the cliffs cradling the Rangitīkei River, to the Ruahine Ranges.

Further on, the track heads into the forest with large matai, rimu, tawa and titoki trees.

Springvale Suspension bridge

Discover;

Built between 1923 and 1925, the Springvale Suspension Bridge spans the Rangitikei River. It is now used as a pedestrian bridge.

The bridge was built to be practical and functional. But in the 21st century we can now admire its engineering and celebrate its rarity – very few examples of this type of suspension bridge remain. It links us to the past in the same way that it once linked the local farming community to the outside world and the future.

The bridge is a rare example of a local early 20th century suspension bridge, and today play host to a campground & popular swimming hole.

These magical and extremely intriguing Boulders are known as cannonball concretions made from mudstone. Some are particularly large.

It is believed that millions of years ago rivers carried sediment from eroding land out to sea. Shells and trees were also carried out to sea and were trapped in the sediment. The seawater contained dissolved chemicals and formed a cement around what was left of the buried shells and plant material. The cement in this case is calcium carbonate. The organic material seems to create a node for this process to occur.

This approach is quite holistic, whether it be Natural Horse Training at the Stables, growing our own vegetables for the Lodge kitchen, having an extended family relationship within the staff, or doing practical things for the natural environment.

From the very beginning our focus has been on delivering a quality, fun experience to our guests, maintaining good relationships with our local community, and operating with a minimum footprint in our natural environment.

River Valley Lodge

Taste; Stay; Experience;

Every wanted to experience our land in the most memorable way? book a rafting trip, take a horseback ride or simply walk through nature. River Valley is your home to a real-life escape.

Within our extended family, we can lay claim to three generations of Rafting and Horse Trekking Guides. Unique amongst adventure operators. Experience, knowledge, and insights, have not been lost with each change of staff, but rather treasured and added to over decades by the family.

The business has always been family owned and run, and started out on the family farm. Being away from the main tourist centers, we have tended to develop systems and ways of doing things that are often unique to us.

Springvale Suspension bridge

Discover;
